Dental Sealants

Your Teeth Are an Important Feature of Your Mouth

Our dental sealants protect your teeth from cavities, especially on molars where deep crevices trap food and bacteria despite your best brushing and flossing efforts. Good oral hygiene is essential with twice-daily brushing and regular cleanings, but even with perfect habits, cavities can still develop on chewing surfaces.

Cavities on molars are common because toothbrush bristles can’t reach deep into the grooves of your teeth. When food particles get stuck in these crevices, bacteria multiply, and decay begins. Our dental sealants seal those vulnerable surfaces, preventing cavities before they start.

Forming Cavities

Cavities develop through a simple process. When you eat, food particles get stuck in your teeth, especially in the deep crevices of your molars. Oral bacteria naturally present in your mouth feed on these particles and produce harmful acids that attack your tooth enamel.

Brushing and flossing help prevent this. They remove food particles and neutralize acids before they can damage your teeth. The problem: toothbrush bristles can’t reach deep into molar crevices. When these areas are missed, acids sit on the enamel and gradually eat away at it. Over time, small cavities grow larger, sometimes extending into the inner layers of your tooth where they can cause serious infection and pain.

Dental Sealants Near You

Our dental sealants are a protective treatment that covers the deep crevices and grooves on your molars, preventing food and bacteria from causing cavities. The application is simple and painless.

Before we apply the sealant, we thoroughly clean your teeth to remove any debris in the grooves. If a cavity already exists in that area, we fill it first to restore your tooth’s health. Once your teeth are clean, we paint the sealant material onto your molars and dry it with a special light.

Life Expectancy of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants, despite being made of plastic, can withstand most normal daily use and can last for several years. However, should a sealant be damaged, we can easily reapply it.

While sealants work to protect the chewing surfaces of your molars, they should not be used as an excuse to neglect your oral care routine. Sealants only protect the areas of the teeth that they cover. Oral bacteria can still cause harm to other areas of your teeth. Therefore, it is still important to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least twice a year. Daily maintenance is important for keeping your mouth healthy, and your cleanings exams allow us to clean any areas you may not be able to get on your own and spot any signs of trouble before serious oral health issues develop.
